Close Encounters of the Hummingbird Kind

If you didn’t have a chance to attend Audubon’s sold-out Hummingbird Encounter event in March, Sandra Young has graciously volunteered to host another event at her home on Wednesday, September 14. This event will provide you with a special opportunity to encounter the abundant native and migratory hummingbirds in her garden that will dazzle you with their beauty, energy, and warrior spirits.

Over the past 15 years, Sandra has created a sanctuary for hummingbirds at her home in El Mirador near the Presa Allende. During the spring and fall migratory seasons, 50 or more hummingbirds of a variety of species can be found feeding upon the flowers and at the feeders that Sandra lovingly maintains. For the migratory species, the nourishment will help fuel them for the arduous journey ahead.

What's in store for you at this event? Audubon birding guide, Norman Besman, will share the natural history of hummingbirds, their mutually beneficial relationship with plants, and how to identify the native and visitor hummingbird species found in San Miguel. Sandra will share her experiences in feeding, gardening and rescuing hummingbirds. We will also provide you valuable information about how to get started in creating your own hummingbird haven, including tips for providing food, shelter, and nesting sites. An assortment of beautiful and fragrant hummingbird attracting plants will be available for purchase, courtesy of Franke’s Vivero, and Audubon’s hummingbird feeders will be on sale as well.

Then while enjoying a glass wine or iced tea, cheese and fruit, we will look at the variety of hummingbird attracting plants in Sandra's garden and enjoy viewing the birds as they zip around the garden and drink from the feeders. We will have a spotting scope set up so that you can see the birds up close and in detail.
Why make your home a haven for hummingbirds? The sad fact is the population of these vibrant and important species is declining, like those of other pollinators, due to habitat loss, changes in the distribution and abundance of nectar plants (affected by climate change), and pesticide use. How well they will ultimately adapt to these changing conditions is largely dependent upon the availability of food sources, which is something that all of us can help to provide.

We are especially thankful to Sandra for providing this second opportunity to witness such an abundant array of hummingbirds in one location - the numbers of which have even surprised hummingbird experts and researchers who have visited her home.

Proceeds from this event will support Audubon's Nature in the City program, which promotes urban habitat for pollinators, birds, and other wildlife through education and demonstration gardens in schools and parks.
