By Bruce Janklow

Sociedad Audubon de Mexico, the only Audubon chapter in Mexico, is currently launching the second cycle of its 2013 environmental grant program with a Call for Proposals.

The program supports projects that protect, conserve or restore the ecology of San Miguel de Allende and its surrounding areas by addressing environmental threats, promoting environmental sustainability, protecting wildlife and its habitat, conserving finite natural resources and promoting environmental responsibility and sustainable economic growth through education and social change. It is open to citizen groups, non-profits, student groups, faith organizations, neighborhood associations, service groups or other organizations that meet Audubon's criteria for grants...

spacer The surprising uses for birdsong
By Denise Winterman |BBC News Magazine
spacer

A 90-second daily show highlighting the songs of British birds has started on BBC Radio 4 this week. But birdsong isn't just beautiful to listen to, it is increasingly being used in surprising ways.

Can a nightingale's song help you pass an exam or a blackbird's twittering encourage you to open a bank account? Sound experts are using it to do both.

spacer Audubon de Mexico: A community partner for ecological awareness

I'm sitting in a third grade class at the Independencia School in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Aside from the charming teacher, there's hardly a full set of teeth in the room, although nobody's smile appears to be diminished by this defect. The teacher's name is Fatima Almeida and she does not work for the school directly, but for PEASMA, the Proyecto de Educación Ambiental San Miguel Allende.

San Miguel de Allende is located in the mountainous central region of Mexico, in what is referred to as the Bajio of the state of Guanajuato. This "low" region in reality averages about 7,000 feet, but is so called for being a relatively flat area ringed by mountains.

By Bruce Janklow

This is the last in a five part series of articles about the Sociedad Audubon de Mexico Grant Program and the important local environmental projects it supports:

In the rural communities surrounding San Miguel, gathered wood continues to play a critical role in providing fuel for food preparation and heat. Yet the increasing demand for wood in our desert climate is DECIMATING OUR TREES ?causing a continuing reduction of trees.

Once in a while would you like to leave the bustling excitement of Centro behind and just drift on the water away from everyone, just you and the white egrets and vermillion flycatchers and roseated spoonbills and woodstorks and herons and an occasional pelican?

Bring your camera and a picnic lunch and relax, occasionally exerting yourself with a few paddles around the bend to explore the next harbor of the presa. This is another side of living in San Miguel de Allende that not many experience. Many expats reminisce longingly about days on the water in their home towns, not realizing that they can recreate that experience a few minutes from Centro.

In celebration of our 45th anniversary, Audubon is offering a special gift to new and renewing members: a unique ceramic vermilion flycatcher, specially made by artisans in Dolores Hildago, that may be used to decorate your home or garden.

It is our small way of saying thank you for your support and to visually remind you of the positive environmental causes you help to support.
