Sociedad Audubon de Mexico
2012 Achievements and 2013 Outlook
Mission:

To conserve, restore and protect habitats and natural resources for the benefit of birds, wildlife, humanity and the earth's future, and to provide opportunities to enjoy and learn about our natural heritage.

2012 was a very active and productive year for Sociedad Audubon de Mexico. The following is a synopsis of our achievements. As always we welcome comment, questions and especially volunteers.

Audubon Environmental Grant Program

The Audubon Environmental Grant Program supports projects that protect, conserve or restore the regional ecology of the broader San Miguel de Allende area by addressing environmental threats, promoting environmental sustainability, protecting wildlife and their habitat, conserving finite natural resources and promoting sustainable practices that lead to behavioral change and sustainable economic and social development.

Seven grants were awarded in 2012 to organizations with innovative and critically necessary environmental projects. To read more about these projects, see our Grant Program section of our website.

Observatorio Cuidano del Agua de San Miguel (OCAS):

During 2012, Audubon became a founding member and continues to be an active participant in this important water coalition. OCAS is comprised of NGO's and citizens dedicated to raising awareness of our water resource issues and advocating for the increasing need to conserve water through improved consumption practices at every level. OCAS, members have been doing significant strategic planning during 2012 and will begin to launch a proactive series of water initiatives in 2013.

Upper Rio Laja Watershed Initiative:

Audubon participated in a strategic planning effort to identify key issues of concern for this important natural resource as well as to develop and prioritize necessary actions to protect, revitalize and conserve this watershed which serves as a life sustaining source of water for our region.

San Miguel Environmental Coalition:

This coalition was formed in 2012 with Audubon as a founding member to create a strategic resource for local government to assist them in developing a sustainable approach to economic growth that takes environmental needs into consideration.

Sociedad de Audubon 45th Anniversary:

In 2012 we celebrated the 45th anniversary of Sociedad Audubon de Mexico, which included a party in July to honor past board members for their achievements and hard work, a gala event held in October where we presented our first Environmental Legacy Award to Bob Haas, who richly deserved this honor for his 20 year commitment to the San Miguel environment and a long list of accomplishments during his tenure as president of Audubon de Mexico. As part of this milestone year, we established an Environmental Grant Program and an Environmental Legacy Fund to support this program. To commemorate Audubon's 45 years of service in San Miguel we created a video which documents our history, achievements, and volunteers. To view the video, click here.

Audubon Eco-Journeys:

For the past three years we have run small group birding and nature/culture trips to many areas of Mexico. In 2012, as a result of increasing support for these trips, we have expanded and enriched the program. Now Audubon Eco-Journeys has monthly departures going to wide variety of destinations perfect for birding, nature and cultural emersion. These two-four days are led by both Audubon and local exert guides. A full description of all our 2013 trips is available on our website.
Monthly Lectures and Bird walks:

Both our monthly lectures and bird walks are traditional, well attended events that continue to be at the mainstay of our service to the community. Each month a different expert speaker gives a talk about some aspect of nature, the environment and our Mexican natural heritage. On the third Sunday morning of each month we lead a bird walk to one of several prime birding locations surrounding SMA. These walks are led by our experienced member-guides. More information on these activities is available on our website.

Kayaking on the Presa de Allende:

Audubon, in cooperation with the Amigos de Presa, undertook an effort to promote and encourage use of the Presa Allende as a boating/recreation destination. During 2012 Audubon facilitated two rounds of kayak purchases via a U.S. based wholesaler, delivering thirty kayaks to happy paddlers. From an introductory kayak lesson, kayakers have expanded their trips to the coast as well as many other areas in Mexico. We are currently expanding purchase opportunities with a sales and rental office in San Miguel.

Looking forward to 2013:

  • Together with El Charco del Ingenio and Camino Silvestri, we are planning the first InternationalHummingbird Festival to take place in Mexico in San Miguel over three days in September, 2013. The Festival will attract attendees from across the Americas, and will present and celebrate the beauty, mystery, folklore and the importance of these incredible birds and other pollinators.

  • The San Miguel de Allende region is under increasing environmental stress and therefore risk. Audubon, working on its own and with coalition partners, will continue to help protect and conserve our natural resources on a variety of fronts, with a focus on water.

  • The wonders of our natural world present an incredible opportunity to learn, enjoy and be together in nature. We are currently planning ways to expand the educational and recreational programs for which we have become so well known.

  • Raising funds so that we can continue to sustain and grow our Environmental Grant Program which invests in local projects that address environmental challenges and promote economic and social well-being. For information on how you can contribute to our Environmental Legacy fund, click here.

  • Through membership and volunteerism we are building a community of people who work together for the benefit of our local environment and all living things. Our goal is to raise our membership to 450 members during the current year. To find out more about membership, please visit our website. If you are interested in volunteering, contact us at sociedadaudubon@gmail.com
We look forward to the year ahead and hope that you will join us in enjoying the beautiful nature of San Miguel and Mexico and working together to leave a legacy of clean and abundant water, clean air, diverse wildlife and productive habitats for future generations.
